There is no application fee for the Society.

It would be ideal if you have the support of the department, though we understand that challenges faced with chartering an organization that addresses equity, diversity, and inclusion issues can be daunting. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to have at least one faculty sponsor, but it is not necessary. Please note that you may eventually need a faculty sponsor to charter a chapter at your institution.

Students must commit 4 to 8 hours per month to participate in the program. Exact days/times will be determined once the cohort is selected. 

This program is open to rising Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and rising 1st and 2nd years of 3 year MFA programs.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, applicants must be a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or 1st/2nd year MFA student.

Rising Seniors, Seniors, and 3rd year MFAs, and doctoral students are not eligible to apply.

Students who are strongly interested in theatre history pedagogy will be given priority in the selection process. Each application must have at least two, but no more than three applicants. We welcome applications from all heritages, races, and cultures. 

This program is currently open to students who have at least two years left in their programs. At the moment, the Society is not an organization for doctoral level students.

Not at the moment. Eventually, an opportunity to charter a Society chapter will be available to institutions everywhere.

Select students (vetted by application and possible interview) will take place in a series of reading/ research sessions, Master Classes, workshops, and possible observations. Students will also gain a firm grasp on the history of performance methodologies cultivated by Black performance practitioners in the U.S. After accumulating a total number of hours and sessions (dates/times to be determined after students are selected) and chartering a B.A.M. Society, students will be the first to be inducted into the Black Acting Methods Society.

Students will need to have reliable access to a computer and the internet. Students must also obtain “Black Acting Methods: Critical Approaches.” If this purchase proves an encumbrance on an accepted student, we are hoping that their department will work to help the student obtain a copy of the book. Students will also be asked to keep a notebook.

Unfortunately, the Studio is not able to help with chartering fees, however, we will work together to see if your department or college can financially assist your chapter.

After completing a certain amount of reading hours, attending several events throughout the year, and chartering a chapter, you will then be inducted into the Society by the B.A.M. Studio. Exact expectations will be shared with those that are selected.

No, there is not an age qualification for Society members. 

The Studio plans to notify all applicants with a decision during the week of May 17th, 2021.

There may or may not be an opportunity to apply or re-apply next year. As we move forward we will work to keep interested parties in the loop about the plans of the Society.
